Heavy rain in Saigon, you open a delivery app and every estimate has doubled while everywhere shows as busy. It is not that riders are slacking or kitchens are slow — rain changes three things at once, and they compound.
In heavy rain motorbikes slow markedly, flooded streets force detours, and junctions back up faster than usual. Four kilometres that take fifteen minutes in dry weather can take thirty.
This is the larger part of the problem, and the part fewer people consider. When it rains nobody wants to go out, so everybody orders delivery at the same time. The kitchen takes several times the usual number of orders in the same window.
Combined with slower riders, the two multiply rather than add.
A crust is crisp because it is drier than the crumb. In rain the air humidity is very high, so the crust takes moisture in from outside — on top of the vapour coming out of the filling inside. Both directions at once.
This is why the same loaf delivered in the rain arrives softer than one delivered in the dry, even over the same time.
The simplest and most effective step. To eat at noon in the rain, order at eleven rather than half past.
That is when everybody orders. Eating early at eleven or late at half past one is markedly quicker, and the food arrives in better condition.
Four people ordering separately means four trips through the rain. One order means one trip — quicker for all four, and easier to clear the 500,000d threshold for free delivery.
More important than in dry weather. A rain delivery is sealed tightly, so condensation builds up; opening it immediately saves most of the crispness.
Say where — the building lobby, reception, under an awning. A rider standing in the rain hunting for a house number is both slow and bad for the food.
A dry pan over medium heat for two or three minutes brings it back. No kitchen? An air fryer at 180°C for four minutes. Take the salad out first.
If you know in advance you will eat late on a wet day, ask for the salad separately when ordering and save yourself the rescue.
One thing runs the other way, and it is worth knowing: a late-night delivery in the rain is fast. After nine the roads are empty, order volume drops sharply, and rain is no longer compounding with a rush hour. Anyone flexible about when they eat will find that the easiest window of all.
Banh Mi XANH is open 24 hours, so that window is available: 38 Lê Thị Riêng, 15B Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, 2B Trần Hưng Đạo and 148B Đề Thám in District 1, and 210 Bùi Văn Ba in District 7. Call 0923.183.183; orders from 500,000d within 5km are delivered free.
Three things at once: the roads slow, order volume spikes because nobody wants to go out, and the two multiply rather than add. Four kilometres that take fifteen minutes dry can take thirty.
Because the crust takes moisture from both sides — very high humidity outside, and vapour from the filling inside. Same loaf, same journey time, softer result.
About 15 to 20 minutes. To eat at noon, order at eleven rather than half past.
11:00 to 13:00, when everybody orders at once. Eleven or half past one is markedly quicker and the food arrives in better condition.
Combine into one order. Four separate orders are four trips through the rain; one is one — faster for everybody, and easier to reach free delivery.
The opposite — usually fast. After nine the roads are empty and order volume drops, so rain is no longer compounding with a rush hour.
Outdoors, heat, wind and dust all work against food. Banh mi copes better than most dishes, but three things still go wrong.
Ordering for parents at home, a colleague in another building, a friend in hospital. When the person ordering and the person receiving differ, a few t
Too early is unnecessary, too late is risky. This maps lead time to quantity and to the hour of day, with the reasoning behind each figure.
Three payment methods suiting three different situations. Choose wrong and you lose time at handover — or lose the chance of an invoice entirely.
