Ordering Spicy Tofu when you can't take heat: four adjustments

14/09/2026· 4 min read

Spicy Tofu is the sandwich people want to try but hesitate over, assuming that if it's called spicy you have to take it as it comes. In fact the heat doesn't come from one place, so it can be dialled down by degrees.

Where the heat comes from

Understanding this is what lets you adjust the right thing instead of abandoning the sandwich.

  • The chilli sauce — the main source, and the most evenly spread, because sauce soaks into the crumb.
  • The marinated tofu — heat is already inside the piece and can't be removed after frying.
  • Sliced fresh chilli — sharpest, but easiest to leave out because it sits loose on top.
  • Pepper — often mistaken for chilli heat. Pepper is warmth at the back of the throat rather than burn on the tongue.

Four sources, four kinds of heat — and crucially, each can be adjusted separately.

Four adjustments

1. Leave out the fresh chilli, keep everything else

The gentlest option, and it keeps almost all the character of the dish. Sliced fresh chilli is the sharp, sudden heat — take it out and the level drops noticeably while the sauce and the seasoned tofu stay.

Good for anyone who handles moderate heat but not the jolt of biting into a slice of chilli.

2. Less sauce, extra vegetables

Less sauce means proportionally less heat. But cutting sauce without replacing anything leaves the sandwich dry — the step people skip before concluding that the adjusted version is worse.

Make it up with extra herbs and extra pickles: pickles bring moisture and a sweet-sour note, so they cover both the dryness and the remaining heat. This is the best-balanced of the four.

3. Add sweetness or fat to blunt the heat

Heat isn't neutralised by dilution — it's covered by other flavours. The compound that makes chilli hot dissolves in fat, not water, which is why cold water gives brief relief and then the burn returns.

In practice, inside the sandwich: extra pickles (sweet and sour) or a little butter. Fat coats the tongue and brings the heat down much faster than drinking water does.

4. Ask for the sauce on the side

The most certain option, and the best one when one sandwich is shared between several people or when you don't know your own limit in advance.

Sauce on the side means you dip and control the amount yourself. The trade-off is that the sandwich isn't evenly seasoned the way it is when mixed in — in exchange for full control.

When a different sandwich is the better answer

Honestly, adjusting isn't always the right fix:

  • No tolerance for heat at all. Strip out the chilli and the sauce and what's left is fried tofu with vegetables — at that point Sliced Vegan Cold Cut or Combination fits better, because they're built to be mild from the start.
  • Buying for young children. The marinated tofu still carries flavour, so a sandwich that isn't spicy to begin with is simpler.
  • An unsettled stomach or being unwell. Not a matter of taste, and cutting the heat doesn't fully solve it.

Adjusting makes sense for mild to moderate heat tolerance. With no tolerance at all, picking the right sandwich from the start saves time.

How to say it briefly

  • "Spicy Tofu, no fresh chilli" — the mildest change.
  • "Spicy Tofu, light on sauce, extra herbs and pickles" — the middle setting.
  • "Spicy Tofu, sauce on the side" — full control.
  • "Just a bit less spicy" — vague; everyone reads it differently. Naming what to leave out is more reliable.

By phone you can give several instructions at once and ask questions back; the app's notes box is best kept to one short point.

Quick answers

Where does the heat in Spicy Tofu come from?

Four sources: the chilli sauce (most evenly spread, since it soaks into the crumb), the marinated tofu (can't be removed after frying), sliced fresh chilli (sharpest but easiest to omit), and pepper — which is throat warmth rather than tongue burn.

What's the gentlest way to reduce it?

Leave out the fresh chilli and keep everything else. The level drops noticeably while the sauce and seasoned tofu remain, so the dish keeps its character.

Does asking for less sauce make the sandwich worse?

It does if you cut sauce without replacing anything — it goes dry. Make it up with extra herbs and pickles, which bring moisture and a sweet-sour note that also softens the remaining heat.

Does cold water stop the burn?

Only briefly, then it returns, because the compound that makes chilli hot dissolves in fat rather than water. Fat or sweetness covers it better — inside the sandwich, that means extra pickles or a little butter.

When should I pick something else instead?

With no heat tolerance at all, when buying for young children, or with an unsettled stomach. Strip out the chilli and sauce and you're left with fried tofu and vegetables — Sliced Vegan Cold Cut or Combination fits better.

Is "just a bit less spicy" clear enough?

No — everyone reads it differently. Naming what to leave out, whether that's fresh chilli, light sauce, or sauce on the side, is far more reliable.
